Why are my catfishes whiskers getting shorter?

you don,t say type of catfish.There are usually two reasons for worn barbels-sharp gravel which wears them down very quickly or bacterial problems which start via sharp gravel and then infection sets in.i know its not always possible but if you have got cats then you need to clean the gravel regularly,better still use proper aquarium sand and you won,t have this problem
