Can anyone advise a video-chat 'virgin' ?

My newly married stepson will be out of town, and away from his new bride, on his birthday. I'm thinking of gifting everything they would need to begin video chatting with each other. Where do I start, how do I know what all I need (besides cameras), and where do I go for the best chat service?
