I am inexperienced, is this normal ?

even though I am very inexperienced I would say that's not normal. Sorry but I am unsure how to help with your problem. The reason he get defensive you try to talk to him about it is because he feels you attacking his manhood or at least that is my guess. He also might not enjoy at all.
