Slide show on movie maker for my parents?

I know this is a little long but please read all of it cause then i have answers to things i don't need answers to. So i'm making a slide show for my parents on windows movie maker and i REALLY wanted to have some home vids in there too. The videos are on tape though and i want a easy way to get them on movie maker. I tried holding my digital camera to the screen and recording it and thats totally fine but the file isn't supported on WMM. I need to convert it but its not there actuall gift so i can't spend money.There is an online thing that is free but it gave my computer a virus last time. Is there any place i can have them made into a supported vid that is free or really cheap?
