Help making friends...?

I am college freshman and I am having trouble making friends. I have one person I talk to regularly outside of cl (but we don't hang out) and I hang out with my suite mates, but I feel like that is only because we live in such close proximity to each other and they are all at least juniors. I guess I just wanted to know if this is only temporary since it is my first semester or if by now I am doomed to solidarity. I go to a commuter school so about half of the students go home on the weekends and so I use that excuse to tell myself its ok to go home or visit old high school friends at other colleges every weekend when I know i should be spending the weekends at my own school having fun. My dilemma is that I do want to stay at school but I would literally have nothing to do. What should I do? I should probably add that I work two jobs partially to keep myself busy and partially to pay for school.
